As shoppers pulled into parking spaces in front of the Stop and Shop store in the Great Road Shopping Center, a picketer calling out “Don’t Stop, Don’t Shop” drew an appreciative wave from most drivers as they pulled away on Saturday afternoon.
On strike for more than a week, there have been no deliveries of fresh goods to the Bedford Stop and Shop for more than 10 days, and many shelves are as bare as if a Bomb Cyclone were headed our way. But a table outside the store is fairly groaning under the weight of donations for the striking workers delivered by supportive residents.
Late last week Bedford workers were invited to hear former Vice President Joe Biden speak on their behalf. Biden tweeted he was coming to Boston to support, “union members who are currently fighting against cuts to wages and health care for themselves and their families.”
Bedford workers chose not to go to Dorchester and hear Biden, eschewing the opportunity in favor of making certain that their picket line would not be crossed in their absence.
The picket line will be in place on Easter Sunday, with workers sharing shifts to allow at least some time with their families.
