Healthy Bedford is launching an Active Transit Initiative this spring and many of our partners are offering suggestions and opportunities to be more active here in our own community.
What is active transportation?
Active transportation refers to people-powered means of travel, such as walking and bicycling to get from one place to another. Most everyone uses active transportation at some point during a trip, whether walking from the car to the store, bicycling to work or scootering home from a bus stop.
By definition, active transportation allows people to build physical activity into everyday life, by enabling them to walk & bike to their destinations.
Even a moderate amount of daily exercise has an impressive range of benefits to both physical & mental health. In addition, by enabling people to drive less, active transportation can reduce vehicular traffic & improve air quality.
Active transportation has many benefits. The main ones can be grouped into five broad categories:
- Health
- Mobility
- Neighborhood Livability
- Economy
- Environment
Why walk or bike to school?
- Walking & bicycling to school enables children to incorporate regular physical activity needed each day while forming healthy habits that last a lifetime. Experts recommend that children and adolescents get one hour or more of physical activity each day.
- Research suggests that children who participate in physical activity before school experience benefits ranging from improved mental health and mood to improvement with on-task behaviors and focus.
