Trash and Recycling Will be Collected on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve

Submitted by Ed McGrath, Bedford’s Recycling Coordinator

Yes, we know it’s the holidays and winter break for the kids, but trash carts and recycling bins need to be emptied.

REMEMBER TO PUT TRASH & RECYCLING AT THE CURB BY 7 AM

  • Christmas Eve ~ Monday, December 24
  • New Year’s Eve ~ Monday, December 31

The Department of Public Works reminds residents that Republic Services will be working on both days. As with any other Monday, residents should have their trash carts and recycling bins at the curb by 7 a.m. on December 24 and December 31.

Post-Holiday Disposal of Packaging Materials

Following all the excitement and festivities, there is the task of getting rid of the boxes and packaging that all the gifts and things arrive in.  To help clear out space in their homes, the DPW is providing residents the opportunity to recycle their cardboard boxes and dispose of the various packing materials like Styrofoam.

The DPW will have two containers at its facility at 108 Carlisle Road on Wednesday, December 26 from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. One container is for cardboard and the other is for Styrofoam and other packaging materials.

The DPW requests that residents remove Styrofoam and other packaging, and flatten the boxes, before putting them in the cardboard container. Styrofoam can be tossed in the other container. The plastic bags and air pillows can be recycled at various stores that have receptacles for plastic film.

“Because of the emphasis on reducing contamination in the recycling stream we’re asking for everyone’s cooperation to only put cardboard boxes in the cardboard container, said Ed McGrath, Bedford’s Recycling Coordinator. “The cardboard will be recycled and it benefits the Town if there is no contamination.

“As for Styrofoam, we realize it is bulky and takes up a lot of space in the trash cart, McGrath said. “We’re hoping this will help residents by giving them an outlet to dispose of it. Unfortunately, the DPW has not found a cost effective option to recycle the Styrofoam so it will be treated as trash.”

Curbside Christmas Tree Collection

Although details will be announced later, the DPW is planning to hold the curbside collection of Christmas trees from  January 8 through January 11, 2019.
