By Julie McCay Turner

At their meeting on Tuesday, September 11 the Bedford School Committee unanimously voted to adopt school expansion scenarios for JGMS and for BHS as proposed by the Schools Building Committee and TBA Architects, Inc. (TBA). These proposals will become articles requesting construction document design funds at the November 13 Special Town Meeting.

Multiple scenarios were considered for each school according to a memo from TBA: “The options were selected by the Building Committee and endorsed by TBA Architects as they provide “minimally for the anticipated needs, [and] optimally for the anticipated needs, [with] potential for increased expansion should it be needed in the future, and potential for housing other Town functions.”

John Glenn Middle School

Options 3 is recommended as it efficiently accommodates the anticipated growth of the middle school, frees the Large Group Instruction room from constant program use and does not inhibit future expansion to connect the A and D wings.

The scheme includes two additions, one at the northeast and one at the southeast corner of A-wing for a total of approximately 7,500 [square feet] and renovation of varying degrees of approximately 3,000 [square feet].

Both addition areas are two storeys and infill open corners of the building. The additions and renovations are planned to accommodate a SAIL/OT suite, an art classroom, two foreign language classrooms, a health classroom, teachers’ workspace, [and] counselor offices.

The renovations will repurpose spaces for Bridge and special education.

The estimated project cost for the renovations and additions at JGMS is $5,146,000 and is inclusive of construction costs, project management, furniture and equipment, and A/E design compensation.

Bedford High School

Option 2 is recommended because it accommodates the anticipated growth of the high school within the existing building, allows for flexible programming, and does not inhibit future classroom expansion.

The work is entirely renovation of varying degrees, totaling approximately 6,700 [square feet], and primarily in the D-block.

The renovated areas will provide enough space for the school to accommodate a SAIL suite, learning center, ELL classroom, counselor office space. a transition/life skills suite, METCO and SRO offices. Academic Achievement Center, enlarged JROTC suite, and a Directed Study space.

The estimated project cost for the BHS renovations is $l,689,000 and is inclusive of construction costs, project management, furniture, and equipment. and A/E design compensation.
