Celebrate the Minuteman Bikeway!

Where are the parties? This Saturday, Bedford, Lexington, and Arlington celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Minuteman Commuter Bikeway with music, food, fun, art, and activities in all three towns!

From 11 am to 3 pm, travel the trail and visit Arlington Center (at the corner of Mass Ave and Rte 60), Lexington Center (at the Visitor’s Center on the green) or Bedford at Bikeway Source, across South Road from the Depot Park trailhead.

  • Score a free Bedford Farms ice cream sponsored by AFC Urgent Care and Bedford Chamber of Commerce
  • Bring your bike for a free safety inspection by the Bedford Friends of the Minuteman
  • Enjoy a slice of pizza or other goodies from Express Pizza
  • Grab a map that shows restaurants, bike racks and outdoor seating in the town center – great for the end of your ride or run
  • Visit with community organizations that support bike and pedestrian access
  • Step inside the historical B&M rail car at the Depot
  • Learn about the planned extension of the Minuteman

Bedford residents who submitted entries for the ‘Bikeway Haiku’ project might find their poems on the Bedford section of the bikeway.  The haikus are put down with chalk paint that will be gone by the end of the winter, so come to see them on Saturday!

Arlington and Lexington have many exciting attractions, including a beer garden, free bike helmets for kids and more.  Check out the event website for more details in each town:  www.bikeway25.org

For some history on the how the bikeway came to be, watch a fascinating documentary by Arlington resident Kim Downey:

With an expected high volume of users out on the trail this weekend, it is important to remember our basic courtesies:

  • Don’t squeeze by users when passing, wait until there is a safe passing area even if it means slowing down
  • Keep your dog to your right when walking
  • If you need to stop, stop off the trail. As Einstein would say, “If velocity = 0 then position = off the pavement!”
  • When passing, give a heads up with a polite bell or an alerting ‘on your left’.

Most importantly, enjoy this unique resource!
