Will you be in Bedford September 4?

Submitted by Lora Goldenberg for the Bedford League of Women Voters

The Massachusetts State Primary is scheduled for Tuesday, September 4, the day after Labor Day and the first day of Bedford’s 2018-2019 school year.

Some voters may be out of town or unable to vote due to physical disability. For some offices when there is only one party represented on the ballot, this will be a voter’s opportunity to determine who will be formally elected on November 6.  Thus it is important for all voters to consider how to participate.

If you will be out of town on September 4 or would be prevented from voting by disability or religious belief, you are eligible to request an absentee ballot.  The deadline for filing a request for an absentee ballot is August 31 at 5:00 pm.

The recommendation is that the request for an absentee ballot be filed as soon as possible.  The form is available online at www.bedfordma.gov/townclerk/pages/absentee-ballots(A link to the official Massachusetts request form is provided as an attachment at the bottom of the Town Clerk’s absentee ballot page.)

If returned via mail, the completed ballot is due back to the Bedford Town Clerk by the close of the polls at 8 pm, EST, on Tuesday, September 4.

Alternatively, a Bedford voter may cast his/her absentee ballot at the Town Clerk’s Office between 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday-Friday.   Town Clerk Doreen Trembley requests that a voter call the office in advance.  Instructions on completing the absentee ballot will be provided.

Note that given the holiday the day before the September 4 election, the option to vote in the office will end on August 31.

Correction: Earlier this story misstated the start date for Bedford Schools. The correct date for kindergarten orientation and the start of school is Tuesday, September 4.
