The field of hopefuls seeking to replace 78-year-old Rene Rancort, the Boston Bruins stalwart who sang the US and Canadian national anthems for more than 40 years, topped out at 600 online hopefuls. Late on Wednesday afternoon, that number dropped to 52 individuals who were invited to Boston Garden for in-person auditions.
Among those 52? None other than Kevin Dougherty, a Voluntary Services Specialist and Events Coordinator at the Bedford VA. Dougherty is well known to anyone who has attended ceremonies or presentations at the hospital in the past several years. His strong voice gives new meaning to anything he sings.
Dougherty was also named the 2018 Distinguished Graduate by the American Military University where he earned both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in Transportation and Logistics Management. The award recognizes graduates who have made extraordinary contributions to the nation and their community. It honors character, accomplishment, and service that represent the university’s mission of service and leadership in a diverse global society.
A US Navy Veteran, Dougherty’s additional awards include the 2018 Greater Boston Federal Executive Board Excellence in Government “Unsung Hero Award” and the 2015 VA National Creative Arts Competition where he captured First Place for Multi-Media Video and Original Song, his composition “She’s a Veteran Too.”
