U.S. Department of Transportation Announces $4.79M Infrastructure Grant for Hanscom Field

Submitted by the U.S. Department of Transportation

U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) Secretary Elaine L. Chao announced the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will award $659.8 million in airport infrastructure grants, the second allotment of $3.18 billion in Airport Improvement Program (AIP) funding.

The grants include a $4.79 million award to Laurence G. Hanscom Field in Bedford, MA to construct an aircraft rescue and firefighting building.

“These Airport Improvement Program grants will ensure that a safer, more efficient Laurence G. Hanscom Field remains an economic engine and vital infrastructure component for its community,” said Secretary Chao.

The grants fund infrastructure projects that include runways, taxiways, aprons, and terminal projects. These projects are important to the safety and efficiency of the nation’s system of airports.

Airports receive a certain amount of AIP entitlement funding each year based on activity levels and project needs. If their capital project needs exceed their available entitlement funds, the FAA can supplement their entitlements with discretionary funding. These funds are made available from the Airport and Airway Trust Fund.  These grant awards do not include any funds from the $1 billion supplemental funding appropriated under the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2018, the availability of which was recently announced in the Federal Register.
