Lifelong Bedford residents Lisa Bailey and Jill Scanlon will perform in Working, a musical production presented by the Voices of Hope organization on Saturday, May 5 at 8 p.m. at the North Shore Music Theater in Beverly.
Working is a musical portrait of the working men and women who are the heart and soul of the American landscape. The show was nominated for six Tony awards and is based on the 1974 Studs Terkel interviews with working Americans. Songs by James Taylor and Stephen Schwartz with new music by Lin-Manuel Miranda lend sophistication and fun to the arrangement. The performance will benefit the Termeer Center for Targeted Therapies at MGH Cancer Center.
According to the press release for the show, “this compelling musical reveals a variety of hopes, aspirations, joys, and dreams. To some, Monday to Friday life is a drudge, but to others their daily routine represents a source of great pride. We are all united by the need to work, and to find meaning in the work that we do.”
Voices of Hope is a group comprised of local performers whose lives have all been changed by cancer. Honored by the Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center, Voices of Hope has donated more than $600,000 to cancer research since 2009. All performers and theater technicians have some connection to cancer, either as survivors or through friends and family touched by the disease. All proceeds from the event go directly to the cancer center.
Tickets for the event can be purchased by contacting the Theatre Box Office by phone at 978-232-7200, online at www.nsmt.org, or in person at 62 Dunham Road in Beverly.
