Recently the cast and crew recently took a break from rehearsals for some Q&A. They shared some powerful insights into the show’s themes and characters.

WHAT DO YOU THINK AUDIENCES WILL GET FROM THE SHOW?

Eden Harfield, Sophomore, Mayzie La Bird: “The audience will be inspired to dream and “think” big, despite what society says. Also, the show displays a big message that everyone has a purpose, no matter how small, or no matter what the world says! While this show is very entertaining for children, it has a message that will touch the hearts of all ages.”

Isabelle Gitlin, Junior, Mrs. Mayor: “I think that audiences will be transported into a different world, they will be entertained by the wild costumes, hair, and makeup but ultimately by the unique story that takes place which teaches plenty of valuable life lessons such as tolerance, acceptance, and kindness.”

WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT THIS PRODUCTION?

Charlie Anderson, Junior, Gertrude: “I like our emphasis on the humanity of all these characters, even though we don’t agree with their actions. There’s so much to explore in that! This is a sweet, whimsical story, and I love that we’re finding the depth in the silliness instead of making this production all about the comedic value. This show can stand on its own funny feet, and so I’m glad we’re taking the time to really find how we connect to it and how it’s relevant to the world around us.”

Ben Woodward, Junior, Horton: “Personally, my favorite part of this show is the music. The songs do an excellent job of portraying the emotions of the characters as well as the mood of the scene.”

WHAT THEMES IN THE SHOW RESONATE WITH YOU?

Talitha Dantas, Sophomore, Sour Kangaroo: “The theme of “a person’s a person no matter how small” resonates with me the most. It has a great message that I think everyone can apply to their lives and what we see in the world today. No matter who someone is or what they believe, everyone is a person and everyone should be treated with love and understanding.”

Ben Woodward, Junior, Horto: “The themes that resonate most with me are community and cooperation. A lot of the characters, especially Horton, take on tasks that they can’t complete on their own and need the help of those around them, such as Gertrude, to accomplish whatever tasks they feel the need to complete.”

Eden Harfield, Sophomore, Mayzie La Bird: “Oh the thinks you can think” is a big theme. I love to dream and create and explore new and exciting things, and I believe everyone should be ready for an adventure that screams “Just think!”

Amelia Leida, Sophomore, Wickersham Brother: “The themes of never giving up and the believing in yourself no matter what others say.”

WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT YOUR CHARACTER?

Eleannah Hernandez, Sophomore, Bird Girl #3: “What I like most about my character is how her personality contradicts mine. As a Bird Girl, my character is meant to be sassy, confident, and poised, so I got the opportunity to get out of my comfort zone and play a little bit of a prima donna.”

Isabelle Gitlin, Junior, Mrs. Mayor: “I like that my character changes throughout the show, you see her change from trying to change Jojo and control him in a way to essentially accepting him and his ideas. There are points in the show that contribute to that change which leads to an improvement of her individual character, yet it is important to keep in mind that she does everything (along with Mr. Mayor) she does because she loves and cares for Jojo.”

Charlie Anderson, Junior, Gertrude: “I love Gertrude’s strength and her dedication to helping others. She absolutely does not have to go to the lengths that she does to help Horton, but she does anyways. She’s kind but fierce, and fiercely loyal. She might be awkward, but she’s a sweetheart, and exactly the bird you  want to have in a sticky situation.”
