Tewksbury Memorial High School hosted the MIAA Division 3 North Boys Basketball Semi-Final between the Bedford High Buccaneers and the Newburyport Clippers on March 7.

Captains Cam Shelmire, Tim Cowen, and Jack Cowan had requested that Bucs fans dress in black, and the Bedford fans did not disappoint.  The team returned the favor by capturing the first MIAA Boys Basketball Division 3 North Semi-Final of the 2017 playoff season.

The Bedford Bucs jumped out to a quick 10-0 lead on shots by Jack Cowan, Tim Cowen, and Cam Shelmire.  Bedford held a 16-13 lead by the end of the first quarter.

As hot as the Bucs were in the first quarter, the Clippers staged a slow comeback to take a halftime lead of 28-27 while Bedford only managed 11 points in the second quarter.

The third quarter started off slowly as both teams’ defenses went to work on what would be a grinder for the rest of the game.  Malachi Hazelton tied up the game at 30 points, with 5:40 to on the clock in the third quarter. Newburyport answered with a 7-0 tear over the next minute and the Buccaneers ship looked like it was about to sink.

Bedford battled back when Senior Cam Shelmire scored with 6:43 minutes left in the third and put Bedford up by one point, 44-43.

Bedford shot 17-23 from the free throw line with Cam Shelmire hitting the final with 2.7 seconds in the game to ice it for Bedford, with a final score of 56-52.

Next, it will be #1 ranked Watertown playing Bedford on March 11 for the MIAA Boys Basketball Division 3 North Final. The game is set for 7 pm at Burlington High School.
