This winter’s severe storms have done more than try our patience. They have resulted in the cancellation of countless scheduled blood drives and depleted area blood reserves by more than 5,000 units, impacting patients in desperate need of blood transfusions both for scheduled surgeries and emergencies. On Monday, April 5, BHS Red Cross Club students and CSF of Bedford Dollars for Scholars’ members will co-host an American Red Cross Blood Drive in the BHS rear gymnasium from 8 am to 7 pm.

BHS students and CSF members have been working together with the American Red Cross for more than a year helping to consolidate and centralize the number of blood drives in Bedford. It is a win-win effort for all involved. First to benefit are the American Red Cross and area residents in need of blood. The need to rebuild the depleted supply is a critical issue. Second, the CSF Dollars for Scholars’ program will benefit by receiving contributions from the American Red Cross for scholarships when a set goal number of blood donations is received. Third, BHS Red Cross Club students benefit by the experience of organizing the drive, educating and encouraging fellow BHS students to give blood, and in turn become eligible for CSF scholarship awards.

Alyson Barraza, American Red Cross Communications Manager for Massachusetts commented, “The Red Cross greatly appreciates the excellent and continued support from the Bedford High School students. Their participation in the High School Leadership Program and efforts have saved many lives and continue to help those most in need of a life-sustaining transfusion. We salute them during the month of April which is recognized as national volunteer month.”
