10 BHS Athletes Named to the 2017 Hall of Fame

Eleven former outstanding student-athletes, spanning almost 50 years of interscholastic sports, have been elected to the fifth class of the Bedford High School Athletic Hall of Fame.

The inductees will be honored at special ceremonies Saturday evening, April 1, at the American Legion hall, 357 The Great Road, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Tickets at $25 each are available through the BHS Athletic Department (781-275-1700, ext. 7). The honorees are:

  • David Ahern ’06, a four-year varsity baseball and hockey player and a Dual County League all-star and captain in each sport. David was a three-year baseball starter at Babson College, and as a senior was named New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference Player of the Year. He also received American Baseball Coaches Association All-America honors. David passed away unexpectedly on Sept. 4, 2016.
  • Kevin Cangiano ’10, a four-year varsity starter in baseball, three-year in football and two-year in basketball. Kevin was named a Dual County League all-star five times and was DCL offensive football player of the year in 2009. He is the high school’s all-time passing leader with 3,377 yards and 32 touchdown passes.
  • Kristen Cangiano ’10, Kevin’s twin sister, a four-year varsity student-athlete in soccer, basketball and softball. Kristen was honored six times as a DCL all-star. As a student at the University of Connecticut, she co-founded a women’s club basketball team, playing against other universities in the Collegiate Club Basketball Association and serving as team captain.
  • Sarah Collins ’02, a graduate of the Bedford Babe Ruth program, a four-year BHS varsity athlete in soccer, basketball and softball, earning DCL all-star honors several times. Sarah was a top-echelon softball player at Quinnipiac University, currently ranked second in career home runs, doubles and runs batted in.
  • Robert Emerson ’83, a three-sport varsity athlete as a junior and senior, serving as captain senior year in football, basketball, and baseball. Rob was selected by game coaches to participate in the fifth Shriners All-Star Game and subsequently played football for two years at the University of Lowell.
  • Mark Lane ’72, a three-year varsity hockey starter who played both forward and defenseman and was captain senior year. Mark went on to play college hockey at Babson and returned to his high school alma mater in the 1980s, coaching the Buccaneers for several years and taking his team to the post-season tournament.
  • Robert Schwelm  ’77, who played several sports in high school and received a college scholarship for his skills in soccer, and ultimately emerged as one of the nation’s leading long-distance runners. He has been ranked as high as second all-time among U.S. marathoners in the master’s category (ages 50-54). He founded and operates the Bryn Mawr, PA, Running Co.., one of the most well-known and respected stores of its kind.
  • Alan Tomczykowski ’01, whose soccer accolades in 2000 included Boston Globe all-scholastic, Lowell Sun player-of-the-year, all-New England and all-state. Alan played college soccer at Sacred Heart University and earned a doctorate in physical therapy. Today he teaches seminars across the country and works individually  with amateur and professional athletes,
  • Richard Tomczykowski ’01, Alan’s twin brother, also a four-year member of the varsity soccer team that won back-to-back MIAA Division 3 North sectional titles. Rich was an eastern Massachusetts all-star in 1999 and 2000 and offensive player of the year in 2000. In high school Rich also ran the outdoor mile, qualifying once for the state championships. He played college soccer with Alan at Sacred Heart.
  • Pam Wetherbee-Metcalf ’83, a three-year varsity soccer and basketball player, earning Lowell Sun and DCL all-star honors twice and scoring more than 1,000 points on the court. Pam was a member of the national champion basketball team at Salem State College and has spent the past 28 years designing, managing and implementing sports, fitness, aquatics and recreation programs. She is currently associate athletic director of campus recreation and club sports at Northeastern University.
  • Bruce Winslow ’64, a three-sport BHS athlete for four years in the early 1960s. Bruce played football at Bates College in Lewiston, ME, where a couple of his receiving records still stand. He was the top scorer in New England, College Division, in 1966, when he earned an honorable mention in the Associated Press all-East team. Bruce was scouted by some NFL teams.
