Gathering for a story to start the day

The Celebrating Differences program returned to Lane School this week, thanks to BEST PTO and SEPAC, Bedford’s Special Education Parent Advisory Council.

In a series of workshops on Thursday and Friday morning, all of Lane School’s hundreds of students gathered on the back field to begin a dialogue about ways individuals learn and play differently.

After a welcome from Principal Rob Ackerman, the sessions began with a read-aloud time before everyone broke into small groups to participate in one of two activities.

In the Scavenger Hunt, members of the group was assigned a disability, and the challenge was in finding ways to work together with various impairments (visual, aural, physical, and speech) while gathering the items on the scavenger list. Students paired up to help complete the task and find everything on their list. Later they will come together to discuss what was easy about the activity, what was challenging,  and why including everyone was important.

In the Web of Friends, a ball of string was tossed from one student to another around a circle creating a web connecting  the students to each other. Each time the string was tossed to another student, she or he told something about the person to whom they were sending the string. Discussion for the Web of Friends circles touched on the importance  of collaboration, and appreciation, and that it is important to understand that everyone has their own strengths.

Co-chairs Erica Colbath and Sheila Mehta-Green gathered scores of parent volunteers to facilitate the morning's activities.
