The morning dawned bright but chilly, with cars parked in low-lying areas sporting dew-clouded windshields. The weather didn’t stop the intrepid cyclists gathered at Depot Park for their 7:45 am chaperoned ride to Lane School. Nor did it deter the volunteers helping to organize the walkers and bikers heading to Davis School, or the walkers crossing Sweetwater Avenue as Crossing Guard Cathy Young kept traffic at bay.
Healthy Bedford coordinator Carla Olson wrote on Thursday to say, “Thank you to everyone who participated in International Walk and Bike to School Day. The student participant numbers are as follows:
- Davis: 30 walkers/20 bike/scooters
- Lane: 52 walkers/45 bikers/3 scooters
- JGMS: 80-100 walkers/50 bikers
The next Safe Routes to School event is Massachusetts Walk and Bike to School Day on Wednesday, May 10. 2017.
“Meanwhile,” continued Olson, “please consider walking and biking to school as a way to build in some fun, exercise, increase school readiness, and reduce traffic congestion.”
