RiverFest2016Mark your calendars so you don’t miss the 15th annual RiverFest celebration sponsored by the Stewards of the wild and scenic Sudbury, Assabet and Concord rivers. Bedford’s signature event will begin early (at 5:15 am) on Sunday, June 19 with a sunrise birding canoe/kayak paddle on the Concord River.

Wildlife specialist Ken Harte will lead a 2 to 3-hour paddle on the Carlisle section of the Concord River and the Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge. A stop is scheduled at a casual riverside restaurant for a hearty breakfast and to compare notes. Near the end of the trip there will be an optional stop at the recently protected Elliot Concord River Preserve. Bring your canoe or kayak, life preserver (required), binoculars, breakfast money, drinking water, and guidebooks. Sign in at 5:15 AM at the Bedford Boat Landing (Rte. 225). For more information about this event call 978-369-0336. Cancelled in the case of inclement weather or flood conditions.

RiverFest offers a rare opportunity to enjoy a full weekend of activities free of charge, from Framingham to Lowell. The festival, which celebrates the Sudbury, Assabet and Concord Rivers, includes more than 40 events in nine communities and is open to all who want to get outdoors and explore.

In Bedford and Carlisle this year there will be the ever popular paddle on the Concord River, and sunrise birding. Kids may especially enjoy the fishing derby, rubber duck race, storytelling, or a close look at wildlife with Mass Audubon.

Stay close to home, or travel a short distance, and spend the day enjoying all the rivers have to offer. All across the MetroWest area, events will be hosted on and along the rivers highlighting all the things that make these rivers so special. There is something for everyone, whether young or old, adventuresome or more interested in a leisurely scenic stroll along the river banks.

In recognition of their outstanding and remarkable resource value, the U.S. Congress designated 29 miles of the Sudbury, Assabet and Concord Rivers as part of the national Wild and Scenic River System in 1999. The River Stewardship Council (RSC) was created to promote the preservation of these river resources. The RSC is a partnership of representatives from each of the eight shoreline communities, state and federal agencies and three regional conservation organizations. All of the events and activities are planned by partner organizations of the RSC.

Come to any RiverFest event and discover what makes our local rivers so special.
