MassGeoBeeRiley Daniel, a 7th grade student at the John Glenn Middle School, will represent Bedford today in the semifinals of the 2016 Massachusetts State Geographic Bee at Elms College in Chicopee. The Massachusetts contest is the second level of the National Geographic Bee competition, now in its 28th year.

A series of School Bees were held for fourth- through eighth-grade students throughout Massachusetts to determine school champions who then took an online qualifying test for the semifinals. The National Geographic Society invited top-scoring students in each of the 50 states, District of Columbia, Department of Defense Dependents Schools and U.S. territories to compete in the state Bees.

This morning Elms College in Chicopee will welcome 100 students from elementary and middle schools a throughout Massachusetts as the National Geographic Bee comes to the campus for the first time. Opening remarks will be given by Elms College President Mary Reap, Mayor of Chicopee Richard Kos and Massachusetts Geography Bee Coordinator Sarah Duncan. Students will then split up into individual competition rooms on campus, where the field will be winnowed to the top 10 finalists.

The Bee culminates this afternoon, with the finalists competing in Veritas Auditorium in Berchmans Hall. The winner of the Massachusetts State Geographic Bee will move on to compete in the National Geographic Bee in Washington, DC, in May, where the grand prize is a $50,000 college scholarship.
