Kammerwerke Double Wind Quintet, based in Bedford, will present the Boston  premiere of Serenade for ten wind instruments composed by Nicholas Sims-Williams as part of a concert of music by British composers entitled “British Bounty II. ” Sims-Williams will attend the concert that begins at 7:30 pm on Friday, April 29 in the sanctuary of the First Parish, the historic meeting house on Bedford Common.

Serenade, is  a lovely, melodious work written specifically for wind dectet.  Much to the delight of all involved, Dr. Sims-Williams, Emeritus Professor of Iranian and Central Asian Studies at the School of Oriental and African Studies, London University, is planning to attend the Kammerwerke concert.

In an email, Sims-Williams wrote, “When I discovered that Kammerwerke were planning to perform my Serenade in their next concert and that the date coincided with a meeting of the American Philosophical Society in Philadelphia, of which I am a member, I immediately decided that the coincidence provided a perfect excuse for a trip to the US.  This Serenade is probably my favourite amongst all my compositions, so I am thrilled at the idea of it receiving what will be its Boston and Eastern US premieres. Having listened to a few clips on their website, I am confident that Kammerwerke will give a splendid performance—I hope they enjoy playing it as much as I enjoyed writing it.”

The concert is the second in a series begun in January, 2015 with the highly successful “British Bounty” concert which resulted in the Kammerwerke Double Wind Quintet’s first full-length CD.

Also on the Program

  • Peter Warlock’s Capriol Suite, an arrangement for dectet of a 1926 composition for strings, based on dance melodies from Arbeau’s Orchesographie (1588), a dialogue between master and pupil about the complexities of 16th century dance steps.
  • Symphony for Ten Wind Instruments by John McCabe was first performed in 1964 by the Portia Wind Ensemble in London.  It is orchestral in nature and is divided into six connected movements. The music is optimistic, but often dark, explosive, and eruptive, with restless and nervous excitement.
  • Serenade for Sophia  was written by Woolfenden to celebrate his granddaughter.  This tuneful piece invokes images of childhood and is the third piece composed by Woolfenden to be performed by the Kammerwerke Double Wind Quintet in its Bedford concerts.

The concert will take place at First Parish in Bedford Unitarian Universalist at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, 29 April 2016.
