The recent blood drive hosted by the BHS Red Cross Club and Bedford CSF Dollars for Scholars was a resounding success which netted over 80 donated pints of blood.
Caroline Fedele, of the American Red Cross and organizer of the Bedford program noted, “There were67 total [pints] from January and 81 total [pints]from April for a total of almost 150 units for this school year. Each unit of blood can save up to 3 lives so the BHS Red Cross Club, CSF Dollars for Scholars, BHS and the Bedford Community worked together to collect enough units to save 444 lives. That is a huge impact and all involved should be proud.” Trent Bordok, faculty advisor the student Red Cross club, had similar feelings, stating, ““So many people donating is a testament to how giving and caring the Bedford HS students and community members are.”
Wednesday’s blood drive was truly a community event as students, parents, school staff, and community members worked together. A large group of BHS Red Cross Club volunteers (Amy Laferriere, Alison Young, Lindsey Giles, Elizabeth Regan, Josh Rubin, Megan Fortune, Sparsh Joshi, Miles Henderson, Andrew Latady, Gillian Russell, Melanie Albrecht, Emily Wiegert) with faculty advisor Trent Bordok ran the show from 8AM to 1PM, hosting so many student and faculty donors that overflow donors had to be rescheduled to the afternoon community drive.
The afternoon community drive boasted a neighborly and festive atmosphere, typical of our Bedford community. A spirit of goodwill was in the air and volunteers, donors and the hard-working Red Cross Staff finally wrapped up at 7pm after banking just over 80 pints for the day.
Because these organizations hope to make this a noteworthy event in Bedford year after year, look for the next Bedford High School / Community Blood Drives in November, 2016 and March, 2017.
