With a thrilling 65-62 win on Saturday afternoon over the Lynnfield Pioneers in the Division 3 North sectional finals, the Bedford Bucs advanced to the Eastern Massachusetts championship game on Tuesday afternoon at the TD Garden in Boston.
Bedford, who entered the North sectional bracket at 13-7 and the #5 seed, advanced to the final after dispatching Northeast Metropolitan Regional Vocational Tech, Arlington Catholic, and #1 seed North Reading in the first three rounds of the playoffs. Lynnfield was the #2 seed in the bracket, and had entered the title game fresh off of wins over Newburyport and Saugus. The sectional final, held at Woburn High School, was a close game from the opening tip.After jumping out to an early 8-0 lead, Bedford held a 12-11 lead after the first quarter and a 27-21 halftime lead, and was ahead 47-43 entering the final quarter. Bedford led 65-58 with 38 seconds to go, and Lynnfield scored two baskets in rapid succession to make it a one-possession game with under 10 seconds to go, but Bedford held on for the hard-fought victory.
The Eastern Massachusetts championship game will be held at 4 pm on Tuesday, March 15, at the TD Garden in Boston. Bedford will play the winner of 19-4 Apponequet Regional High School (Lakeville, Freetown, and Assonet) and 20-3 Bishop Stang High School (in North Dartmouth), who square off tonight in New Bedford in the Eastern Mass. Division 3 South sectional final.
The other half of the state Division 3 Final Four features Oxford, who at 21-2 won the Central Mass. title, and the winner of Hoosac Valley (14-9) versus Easthampton (20-2) who meet tonight at UMass for the Western Mass. crown. The Central/Western Mass. Championship game will take place at the DCU Center in Worcester on Tuesday at 4 pm.
