Three members of Boy Scout Troop 194 received the highest award in Scouting on January 9th. Roy Watson-Badell, Quin Houck and Steven DeVellis are now among the less than four percent of Scouts that ever earn their Eagle rank.

The boys are the 79th, 80th and 81st members of the troop to earn that distinction. Boy Scout Troop 194 has been developing youth leaders and Scouting in Bedford since 1965.

ROY WATSON-BADELL started Scouts as a Webelos Scout with many of his friends. His family moved to Bedford and began his journey to Eagle as a member of Troop 194 where he immediately started enjoying all the activities and working his way up through the ranks.

In High School Roy was very active. He was a UNICEF Club member, attended the Student Trooper program and Boys State, both sponsored by Bedford’s American Legion. He was a Best Buddies Club Associated member and a Varsity Javelin thrower.  He actively enjoys Fly Fishing, Sailing, Horseback Riding, Rollerblading, Scuba Diving, Mountain Biking, Kayaking, Canoeing, ATV-ing, Skiing and Snowboarding.

He became a Life Scout on November 6, 2012.

Roy’s Eagle project dealt with the obesity epidemic that exists in this country which can only be resolved through education. He and his team used Bedford Cable TV and YouTube to spread information to do with this problem. As part of his project he wrote and directed a public service announcement (PSA) in an effort to deter obesity and promote health, fitness, and well-being.

Roy passed his Eagle Board of review on February 2, 2015.

Currently he is attending UMass. Roy is majoring in Economics and his current “long term” plan would be to spend two years working for the Peace Corps following completion of his B.A. He then plans to pursue a master’s degree in international relations.

QUINTEN HOUCK joined Cub Scout Pack 194 in the fall of 2008 working towards the rank of Tiger. He concluded his Cub Scout time by earning the Arrow of Light and all 20 Webelos Activity badges.

Quin crossed over to Troop 194 in Bedford in March of 2013 and hit the ground running.  He earned his first merit badge within a month when the troop went to the Spellman Museum of Stamps and Postal History earning the Stamp Collecting Merit Badge. Quin continued to advance quickly through the different ranks, earning his Life Rank on August 28, 2014.

Quin attended summer camp and numerous camping trips with the troop.  He has served as the Troop Historian and as Assistant Senior Patrol Leader.  He has sold a lot of popcorn and in the fall of 2014 helped to organize the troop fundraiser at Flatbread Company.  Quin was elected to the Order of the Arrow in March of 2015 and completed his ordeal in September 2015.

For his Eagle project, Quin wanted to help some of the families in need in Bedford. Quin worked with the Bedford Housing Alliance (the group who helps coordinate volunteers who want to help Bedford families in need). He and his team collected and delivered items accordingly to those Bedford families.

Quin has learned the value of organization, commitment, and hard work, and has learned that setting goals goes a long way to helping you get where you want to go in life.

Quin passed his Eagle Board of review on June 18, 2015.

STEVEN DEVELLIS started Cub Scouts as a Tiger Cub in Pack 194 with a few of his good friends, enjoying everything from overnights to the Pinewood Derby races.  Crossing over into Troop 194 was an easy choice where Steven continued to enjoy the spaghetti suppers, camp outs, and especially the American Legion Camporee.

As Steven grew through the ranks at Troop 194, he enjoyed serving the troop as a Patrol Leader and Instructor. He was selected for the Order of the Arrow and earned the 2015 World Conservation award. He was the Bedford American Legion’s representative to Boys State in the summer of 2015 where he was elected as both Town Selectman and State Representative. Steven also participated in Venturing Crew 1776 for a season in 2014. He became a Life Scout August 7, 2014.

Now in his senior year at Belmont Hill School, Steven enjoys track and wrestling.  In addition to sports, Steven enjoys participating in many BHS musical and theater productions. Steven built on his scout spirit by taking part in four school community service trips during school breaks.  He traveled to Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina and California to work with underprivileged communities repairing churches, cleaning communities and building irrigation systems.  Steven also belongs to the BHS Chess and Drama Clubs. In 2015 he earned entrance into the National Chinese Honor Society.

During the summer break, Steven has starred in the Arlington Public Theater’s production of The Assassins, and in the summer of 2014 volunteered as the Activities Coordinator at Carleton Willard Village.  Steven has also twice attended the Middlebury Monterey Language Academy four week Mandarin immersion course study in Vermont

For Steven’s Eagle project, he elected to work with the Bedford Trails Committee, the Bedford Department of Public Works and the Bedford Conservation Commission. He and his team constructed, and then erected, a trails kiosk at the entrance to the Fawn Lake trail off the parking area at the Middlesex Community College.

Steven passed his Eagle Board of review on August 19, 2015.
