Public Safety-BPDJust before 11 pm on Saturday, December 26, social media in Bedford was alive with questions about “helicopters circling an area around Springs-Hancock-Nickerson-Page Roads,” and apparent police activity on North Road. The chat lasted until the wee hours of Sunday morning, and included second-person accounts of being pulled over on Great Road, an area sealed off leading to North Road, an ambulance heading toward Concord, K-9 units investigating a car that might’ve been stolen as a get-away vehicle, and individuals with flashlights in a backyard on Fletcher Road.

An official statement was issued on behalf of the Bedford Police late Monday night:

Police are also investigating multiple break-ins around the area of North Road that are believed to have occurred over the weekend. On Saturday, Dec. 26 at 10:55 a.m., police received a report of a breaking and entering at an office building at 41 North Road. The area was vandalized and items from multiple offices were taken. That same day, at 10 p.m., police received a 911 call from a residence on North Road. The caller reported someone was attempting to break into the home and steal the family car. The suspect fled into the woods behind the home and a search was initiated. Police from Billerica, Burlington, Concord and Lexington along with the State Police, including their K-9 units and Air Wing, assisted the Bedford Police Department but could not locate the suspect. These are allegations. All suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty.

Bedford’s Police Chief Robert Bongiorno said in a telephone interview on Tuesday that the out-of-town suspect was understood to be on foot and unarmed.

Police K-9 units were called in along with the State Police Air Wing’s infrared capacity given the swampy, wooded area between North and Fletcher Roads, and the length of time the suspect had been at large.

The Bedford Police Department has apprehended the suspect and he is in custody while a full investigation of potential charges is underway.
