This year’s winter solstice (and the beginning of meteorological winter, no matter the temperature) will take place at 11:49 pm on Monday, December 21.

At 7 am on Tuesday, December 22, a group of stalwart early risers will drive away the dark  and sing up the first morning of winter in a sunrise solstice celebration at Fawn Lake.

“…And so the shortest day came
And the year died
And everywhere down the centuries of the snow-white world
Came people singing, dancing
To drive the dark away
Let’s all proclaim together–Welcome Yule, WELCOME YULE!!!”

After the sunrise sing at Fawn Lake, the group will go to First Parish on Bedford Common for a light, potluck  breakfast snack. Celebrants are invited to bring something, but not to worry about coming empty-handed because the event is is all very informal and potluck. “It will be what we make it,” said organizer Dawn LaFrance-Linden.

The group is expected to arrive at First Parish around 7:30 and to leave by 9am. Those who are unable to greet the returning sun are certainly welcome to drop in and join us at the church for our own brand of sunshine before heading off to work or school.

Participants should meet in the Fawn Lake parking lot on Sweetwater Ave (on the right, past the Lane school) and proceed down to the lake shortly past 7am. From the parking lot, we’ll follow the path down to the lake and continue counterclockwise a short distance.

According to LaFrance-Linden, “The spot we’ve picked is quite close to the parking lot, so we’ll keep an eye out for more people as we await the sun.”
