After the business of Special Town Meeting drew to a close Monday night, Moderator Betsey Anderson made a personal announcement. Noting that her current term as moderator will end in March, she said she does not intend to run for reelection. Anderson has served as Town Moderator for sixteen years.
She encouraged those interested in serving as moderator to step forward, and said she would be willing to meet with anyone interested in the position. In addition, under a recent Charter change, the Moderator can appoint a Deputy Moderator who would serve in his or her absence. That position is also vacant.
When she was running for the current term, Anderson wrote (https://thebedfordcitizen.org/2013/03/01/betsey-j-anderson-candidate-for-moderator/) about the value of Town Meeting: “Open Town Meeting is the only form of government where every voter can participate directly. Your opinion will be heard and your vote can make a difference! As the Town faces ongoing financial pressures and complex decisions that will impact the present and the future of Bedford, Town Meeting remains important to all residents and taxpayers.”
She went on to comment on the contribution of the Moderator, “It is important to me that our Town Meetings allow for full discussion of the issues, that we respect the individual’s right to express his/her view, and at the same time that the meetings are businesslike and move at an appropriate pace.”
