The Town of Bedford is converting the remaining 700 of our 1,500 street lights from High Pressure Sodium (HPS) to new LED fixtures. We have already realized a savings in our energy costs from the first phase of the project which was completed in 2013. The street light conversion project also offers us the opportunity to replace the old lamps that had exceeded their useful life, several of which have recently burnt out. In addition,LED street lights offer improved nighttime visibility and a more uniform distribution while reducing light pollution.
According to Public Works Engineer Adrienne St. John, “We’re starting the second phase of Bedford’s street light conversion project this week [… and the contractor] will be working in the west/southern areas of Town.” Click here to view a scalable PDF of the map that shows the light to be replaced.
The new lamps and photo cells were purchased with funds from the Green Communities Competitive Grant from the Massachusetts Department of Energy. The field work is being done by Pine Ridge Technologies, Inc. and should be complete by the end of November. If you have any questions, please contact the Department of Public Works at (781) 275-7605.
