Hello, Bedford, and welcome to the sports report

First, the good news.

At the Division 5 East Cross Country meet on Saturday in Wrentham the boys team did well, coming in 8th place out of the 28 teams competing. The Bucs were led by Thomas Kimmel, who ran the 5K course in 17:35, good for 23rd place out in the 188-runner field. Teammate Isak Johnson came in just behind him, at 17:50, to pace the Bucs attack. Kimmel qualified for the State meet with his time.

On the girls side, the Lady Bucs came in 11th out of the 23 teams competing. The girls placed two runners in the Top 20, with Nicole McLellan clocking in at 20:15 and Sabine Galvis at 20:19, and with those times they both qualified for States.

The State meet takes place this Saturday at Stanley Park in Westfield. Good luck to our three competitors.

Just for fun, I looked up the Westfield High School mascot… guesses? I think it’s connected with the Air Force Base out there… the Bombers.

But with every pair of good stories, there is an equal and opposite reaction.

The girls volleyball team traveled to Melrose last Tuesday in a quarterfinal showdown against the Red Raiders, and despite carrying the momentum of their huge upset win over East Boston into the match, they were swept out of the tournament, losing 3:0. But with only three seniors graduating from the team, there’s no doubt that the team will be back, gunning for more, in 2016.

And finally, the football team looked a little, well, deflated, on Friday night at home, where they were pushed around the field for the better part of the game, coming up on the short end of a 21-0 score line. Next up for the Bucs is the Thanksgiving Day clash, this year away at Concord-Carlisle, hopefully minus the plowable snow that we had last November on game day.

BAYS soccer is over, after a final Saturday that featured 40 degree temperatures and 40 mile-per-hour winds across Eastern Massachusetts. Three Bedford teams ended up without a loss on the season- the U12 Girls Renegades at 8-0-2, the Boys U9 Patriots at 9-0-1, and the boys U14 Xplosion, who capped off an undefeated, untied season at 10-0-0 after their 4:0 win at Wellesley and a preposterous 30-2 goal differential. Enjoy the winter off, everyone, and see you back on the fields in April.

In Boston sports, the Celtics went to Oklahoma City last night and improbably grabbed a 100-85 win over Russell Westbrook and the Thunder, who wore some very ugly orange jerseys. And I usually love orange. This surprising win came on the heels of another victory over the Hawks on Friday night and moved the Celts to 5-4 on the year. Two quality wins in a row are impressive and I might consider paying more attention if things keep going this way.

The Bruins continue to play terrible hockey at home and it really makes no sense. They are 2-5-1 at home and 6-2-0 on the road. Can anyone explain that? I think we should put a roadblock on I-93 and the Tobin Bridge to keep them from coming in to the Garden tomorrow night when they host the Sharks.

But for another week, one story dominates the headlines, as the Patriots again fought tooth and proverbial nail against the New York Football Giants in the Meadowlands, but this time emerged with a 27-26 victory on a last-gasp 54-yard field goal from kicker Stephen Gostkowski, who saved Tom Brady from a week of second-guessing and fall-guy-taking after his subpar performance. I think we all knew it was going to be close, and I’ll take credit yet again for an accurate prediction of a Patriots win and a Giants cover from last week, but the game was hard to watch and incredibly stress-inducing.

The Pats and their gaudy 9-0 record host the Bills next Monday, and write it down now, they will both win and cover the 7 point spread, although with Julian Edelman out until the playoffs it will have to be the Danny Amendola show in the slot receiver position from here on out.

Here’s hoping the Bills do not wear the hideous all-red uniforms against the Pats that they wore last Thursday against the all-green Jets in a game that resulted in color blind viewers being unable to distinguish between the two sides. Talk about a wardrobe malfunction.

Looking a little farther down the road, the Pats will then travel to the Mile High City to take on the Broncos on the Sunday night after Thanksgiving, but with the rapid demise of Payton Manning, who received a 0.00 QB rating after his 5 completions and 4 picks yesterday, I’m not thinking that game will be very competitive. 11-0 looks like a done deal. Let’s hope that I’m right.

This is Dan Brosgol, that was the sports report, I’ll see you next time.
