Hundreds of Bedford students and parents walked or biked to school today. They arrived at the schools singly, in pairs, in trios, in clusters, and in large supervised groups. And one family traversed the Minuteman Bike Path to reach the Waldorf School in Lexington.

Several dozen walkers and parents accompanied Margot Fleischman, traversing neighborhood roads between St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and Lane School. Lane School principal Rob Ackerman and assistant principal Keith Kinney traveled with the cyclists who followed the Narrow Gauge Rail Trail from Depot Park to the school.

Middle School principal Kevin Tracey was on hand to register riders at Depot Park; Youth and Family Services director Sue Baldauf and Healthy Bedford coordinator Carla Olson were on hand, as was Peter Ricci, the recently-retired president of Bedford Elementary Schools Together, who stopped by after biking to the Middle School with his son and before heading to Lane School for a meeting.

Droves of Davis School students gathered in the parking lot of the Lutheran Church of Our Savior before making the trek along Davis Road to the school.

The Bedford Police offered support for crossing busy roads. They were helped by Bob Dutton of CERT, Bedford’s Community Emergency Response Team; Kristin Dowdy of the DPW; and last year’s Citizen of the Year Ralph Hammond. School Crossing officer Cathy Young and her pal Ranger, familiar faces at both Lane and Davis schools, were at their accustomed post.

Whether programs such as Walk/Bike are successful is always a question, but Principal Tracey noted the substantial increase in the number of bike racks installed at the Middle School over the past two years. ‘It’s great to see kids riding bikes,” Tracey said, “but it’s even better when they’re safely outfitted and wearing helmets.”
