Hello, Bedford and welcome to the Sports Report.

The lights were on at Sabourin Field last Friday, but despite the rain and wind whipping across the field, Bedford ran all over Boston Latin, scoring the first 41 points of the game and winning 41-6. Jake Eliason and Matt Timperio both recorded interceptions on the defensive side of the ball and touchdowns on offense en route to the easy victory. The 2-2 Bucs host DCL rival Weston this Friday evening under the lights.

Boys soccer is off to a 3-2-2 start but had all of last week off, the team resuming league play Monday against Newton South. The Bucs are sitting on a two-game winning streak, having dispatched Latin 1-0 behind a goal from Justin Hafer and also defeating Waltham 2-1 two weeks ago.

Girls soccer has hit a rough patch, and now sits at 2-5-2 after last week’s 3-0 loss at Tewksbury Memorial. The Lady Bucs look for their first win since September 24 at home on Monday against Newton South, and hit the road for away games at Westford and Gloucester later this week.

The golf team lost to Concord-Carlisle last week to bring the record to 4-3, and this week will be playing golf every day, with matches each afternoon, including Monday at Cambridge Rindge & Latin and Tuesday at Acton-Boxboro.

The volleyball team had a 2-1 week last week, winning at Belmont and at Waltham, but dropping their home match against powerhouse Concord-Carlisle. The girls play Newton South on the road and host Westford and A-B this week.

After three straight losses, the field hockey team will try to right the ship this week as they host Lincoln-Sudbury and Acton-Boxboro, hoping to improve on their 2-4 record.

And, finally, the cross country teams have begun competition, with the boys and girls both winning last week at Wayland, and the boys coming up just short against C-C.

BAYS travel soccer concluded its fourth week of play over the weekend, and Saturday saw two Bedford teams keep up their perfect start to the season, with the boys U14 Xplosion handling Brookline Santos on the BHS turf field with ease, 7-0, to move to 4-0-0 on the season, and the girls U9 Renegades winning 3-2 at Sudbury to also move to 4-0-0. And a special shout-out to the girls U12 Renegades for their 4-0-1 start to the year, including playing two games this past Saturday due to their Columbus Day weekend game being rescheduled- you may remember that we had two members of the Renegades on our Bedford Day live sports broadcast.

In other sports news travel basketball tryouts for winter 2015-16 took place last week and Bauman Rec League registration is now online, so start making plans now for the upcoming hoops season… and parents, say goodbye to your non-basketball life, as most travel players will have three games per weekend. Good times.

In other sports news the Red Sox season is mercifully over, and despite a relatively inspiring late season surge they did manage to lock up last place for the third time in four years.

And in case you missed it, today news broke that John Farrell will return as manager next season, or at least for the first few weeks until an excuse is made to fire him after what will most likely be a slow start to the season. Hopefully most of the other junk that took up a roster spot this year won’t be coming back as well— and I’m looking right at you, Hanley Ramirez and Pablo Sandoval.

The Celtics and Bruins are busily making preparations for regular seasons that are going to be disappointing so I’d rather not talk about it.
The Patriots, however, are preparing for Dallas, as they visit the injury-depleted Cowboys on Sunday at 4:15. The Patriots juggernaut looks basically unstoppable, and Vegas has them favored on the road by at 7 or 7.5. Me? I’ll take the Pats, and the points, and the over on the 49.5 over/under.

Finally, a quick overseas update that has very little to do with Bedford but is great sports story.

In a great moment of karma and coincidence, I was in Israel last week the same night that a Champions League match between Dynamo Kiev and Maccabi Tel Aviv was taking place, so this huge soccer fan got an enormous thrill out of sitting five rows from the field as the Champions League anthem played and a seriously consequential football match then took place. It was only the 10th  Champions League match ever hosted in Israel, and despite the Ukrainian champions more or less controlling play and winning easily 2-0, it was amazing to be there, and like a true Bedford patriot (or Buccaneer, more aptly), I was sporting my Bedford baseball long-sleeved shirt under the Tel Aviv jersey I was wearing. You can read my match report on my blog, if you’re interested.

It’s great to be back, have a wonderful week and a delightful Columbus Day weekend. See you next time.
