firstparishapplelogoMusic will be playing as the sweet smell of home-made apple crisp fills Bedford Common on Saturday, September 26th when the Fourth Annual First Parish Apple Festival gets under way at 10 o’clock.

Fall fairs are a tradition in New England, and the First Parish Apple Festival is carrying on that tradition… with one big exception:  A hallmark of most fairs are the over flowing trash cans and discarded water bottles.  Not this fair though.

In 2014 the Apple Festival went Green. Instead of using Styrofoam bowls and plastic spoons, the Apple Festival used compostable bowls and real stainless spoons that were washed and sterilized throughout the day. The results were amazing. Rather than having overflowing trash cans and discarded water bottles at the end of the fair, the trash pile was one you’d expect from a typical family of four!

It was a lot of work but well worth it. The First Paris Apple Festival Committee worked closely with the First Parish Green Sanctuary Committee to transform the Apple Festival to a green one. “This was an ambitious project,” said Janet Powers, of the First Parish Green Sanctuary Committee. “But with the right people, the right planning, and dedication, it was very doable.”

An estimated 1,000 people came out last year and enjoyed what is becoming a Bedford fall tradition.

This year attendees will find apple crisp, cider donut sundaes, and fresh homemade soups and cheeses for lunch. Pumpkin decorating, face painting, and other fun activities will keep kids big and small busy. Local artisans and crafters will be selling their wares, all with live music playing in the background. Raffles for local restaurants and a beautiful queen sized quilt will be held throughout the day.

Come check out the little green Apple Festival on Saturday September 26, 2015 starting at 10am on the Bedford Common.
