An opera lecture series sponsored by the Bedford Center for the Arts will return for the fourth year beginning September 28th, with Verdi’s Il Trovatore. David Collins, a well-known Boston Opera aficionado, who was for eight years resident lecturer for Opera Boston, leads the lectures.

The lectures are designed to take advantage of the live, in HD telecasts of performances of the Metropolitan Opera in local theaters.  Il Trovatore is one of Verdi’s most well known works, with such music as the Anvil Chorus that will be recognizable to any fan of classical music.  The story is one of mistaken identify, and a love triangle between a Count and a troubadour, and the tragic ending typical of many of the great works in the repertoire.  According to Bob Bass who coordinates the lecture series, “The music of Trovatore is classic Verdi and it’s hard not to want to sing along with it!  This is a great opera for those who want to find out what the excitement about opera is all about and for the seasoned opera fan as well”.

Two other lectures will be offered.  On January 11, the opera The Pearl Fishers,  by the French composer, Georges Bizet, will be explored; the climatic third opera by Donizetti about the Tudor queens, Roberto Devereux, with be the topic for the April 11th lecture.

“We’re so happy to have this opportunity to provide people with the background for these operas so that they get even more out of the performances that they attend” said Bass.  The lectures use videos and audio clips to help the opera goers to understand the background and plots of these operas.

All lectures are held in the Bacon Room overlooking the town green in First Parish.  Space is limited and pre-registration is required.  Individuals wishing to attend can send a check made payable to the Bedford Center for the Arts, to Bob Bass, 42 Fletcher Road, Bedford, MA 01730.  The cost is $15/individual for BCA members, $20 for others.  Individuals may also join the BCA or renew membership to BCA for $25 at the same time and pay members’ price for the lectures. Online registration is available at https://bedfordarts.wildapricot.org  .
