Short Takes: News Briefs from the July 6 Selectmen’s Meeting

By Meredith McCulloch

SelectmenRevised Projection for Water and Sewer Rate Increase: The Selectmen approved final rates for water and sewer in FY16 on July 6.  Previous estimates had anticipated a larger increase of 12.7 percent overall. A review of the records by Town staff led to the replacement of some meters on commercial/industrial buildings. They will provide more accurate metering and therefore more revenue from water rates. This change, coupled with a decision to pass along the full 7.7percent increase in water costs to the irrigation rate, means that a smaller increase in water rates is required. The end result is a 7.1percent increase overall in water and sewer.  The previous estimate had been 12.7percent for water and sewer combined.

Contract for Sabourin Field Lighting Signed: The Selectmen signed a contract for $176,688 with Musco Sports Lighting to replace the lights for the athletic field and track at Sabourin Field and to provide remote monitoring and maintenance of those lights.  The lights will be metal halide units mounted on galvanized poles with concrete bases. Track lights will remain lit for nighttime walking. Amy Hamilton, Director of Recreation, will manage the timing for field lighting based on scheduled use.

Low and Moderate Housing Agreement with Crossing at Bedford Finalized: A covenant with Bedford Crossing established two units of low and moderate housing within the condominium complex at 54 Loomis Street. One unit has one bedroom and the other has two bedrooms. The lottery for the two units was completed on June 23, 2015 from among ten eligible households.  To be eligible a household may earn no more than 80 percent of the area medium income based on family size. Low and moderate housing in Bedford is overseen by the Housing Partnership and managed through a cooperative agency, the Regional Housing Services Office.
