Sewer Force Main Rehabilitation to Start in August

The Selectmen approved a contract for rehabilitation of the force main sewer line connecting Bedford to Lexington. The work will be done in two sections. The Lexington section  will  begin in August and go from North Hancock Street in Lexington to the Westview Cemetery near the Bedford line.  The second portion, which runs from Bedford’s main pump station at 299 The Great Road to the Westview Cemetery in Lexington, will start in the spring.

The contract was awarded to Revoli Corporation, the firm that completed Phase 1. While the work is underway, a by-pass will be installed and then the twenty-inch sewer pipe will be relined. The work is not expected to impede traffic on the ramps to and from Route 128.

The project was funded by a $4,500,000 bond authorization at 2015 Annual Town Meeting, plus a contribution from Hanscom Air Force Base under an agreement with the Town to carry wastewater to Lexington. From there it goes to the MWRA (Massachusetts Water Resources Authority) Deer Island Treatment Plant.

Town Services to Continue During Town Hall Renovation

There should be little disruption to Town services during renovation of Town Hall starting in August.  The work of upgrading the mechanical  systems such as heat, electrical and plumbing, should be substantially completed by the end of November.  While the work is underway most town offices will be relocated to cubicles in the multi-purpose room. An on-site trailer will  house the Town Manager and his staff.  The Assessors will remain on the lower floor. All conference rooms will be available for evening meetings.

The contract for $2,007,000 was awarded to New England Builders and Contractors, who had the low bid among four bidders. Among the previous public projects they have completed successfully  were the Amesbury Fire Department, veterans’ housing projects for Boston, Chelmsford and Westford and a swimming pool for Belmont.

Sparta Liquor License Hearing Adjourned

The public hearing to consider revocation of the liquor license of Sparta Restaurant (Bedford Coach, Inc.) was adjourned until September 21. The delay was in response to a request from Kenneth Leitner, the owner’s attorney, who said the owners still hope to sell the business along with the license.

In a letter to Town Manger Richard Reed, Leitner wrote, “Bedford Coach, Inc. is a good corporate citizen of Bedford and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts; it has and is actively marketing the sale for its retail All Alcoholic Beverage License that it has held for thirty-nine years.’

The license would expire December 31, but under Town By-Laws the Selectmen may revoke a license that is not in use for seven consecutive days.  The restaurant closed May 24. In agreeing to the delay the Selectmen noted that Sparta has been a family-owned business in Bedford for 39 years, and the family are still residents.  It was also noted that another restaurant in the Great Road Shopping Center would serve the community.
