Bedford Scores Big at DPW’s Recycling Event

By Ed McGrath, Bedford Recycling Coordinator

Reduce-Reuse-RecycleIf you were keeping score at home, last Saturday’s recycling event at the Bedford Department of Public Works was a rout. The weather was sunny and warm and 246 households took part in the event.

“It was a great day,” said Ed McGrath, Bedford’s Recycling Coordinator. “We had six collection stations. The objective was to get people in and out in under 10 minutes and leave smiling. I think we met that objective.”

McGrath added there was a steady flow of cars and every station was busy all morning.

With the help of a sponsorship by Republic Services, the DPW offered residents the opportunity to get paper shredded and recycle Styrofoam, scrap metal fluorescent lamps, rechargeable and sealed lead acid batteries, mercury containing items, car batteries, tires and rigid plastics.

ReFoamIt, the Styrofoam recycler, left with its truck three-quarters full, 61 tires were collected for recycling and the containers for scrap metal and rigid plastic were 75 percent full. Doc Shredding estimated it collected 200 boxes of paper to be shredded. As for fluorescent lamps, McGrath said more than a drum of four-foot lamps was collected, two boxes of CFL bulbs and two boxes of other lamps. In addition, residents dropped off about 25 sealed lead acid batteries, 10 car batteries and enough rechargeable batteries to fill a 5-gallon bucket and eight boxes.
