With Pole Capping and a plethora of additional activities scheduled for Saturday and Sunday under sunny skies with (dare we say the words) warm temperatures, prepare to enjoy!
The Saturday before Patriot’s Day is one of our town’s finest days: The Bedford Minuteman Company invites hundreds of re-enactors to march with them from Bedford Common to Willson Park where they will raise the Liberty Pole, and risk the ire of a contingent of Red Coats. In 2013 Sharon McDonald, now Bedford’s Town Historian, wrote an encyclopedic and entertaining history of Pole Capping, albeit before Willson Park was identified as being correctly spelled Willson, in honor of Jonathan Willson, the Captain of the Bedford Minutemen who lost his life on April 19th, 1775. Traffic will be re-routed. Willson Park is located at the intersections of The Great Road, Concord Road and North Road. In the interest of public safety, the intersection will be closed and traffic will be detoured beginning at 10:30 am through approximately 12 noon. The following roads will be open during the ceremonies at Willson Park: Carlisle Road from the Carlisle border to the intersection with North Road; North Road from Carlisle Road to the Billerica border; and Pine Hill Road. Concord Road to points Concord (MA), Hartwell Road, McMahon Road, Davis Road and access to the library. South Road. Pine Hill Road. Springs Road and The Great Road, East of Bedford Common.
And if you’re awake early, First Parish on Bedford Common will serve a PoleCapping Pancake Breakfast from 8 to 10 am.
After the festivities you’ll want to check the Friends of the Library’s Spring Book Sale from 10 am to 4 pm, or the Freemason’s 2015 Spring Open House at the Frank W. Thompson Lodge.
A special Bedford Chamber of Commerce promotion focusing on local businesses celebrating Spring, Bye-Bye Winter, kicks off on Saturday, and runs through Monday, April 13.
And in the evening there is a pair of choices: a Trivia Night at St Michaels to raise funds that will repair winter’s damage to their parish hall, or bring the family to JGMS to enjoy a 6 pm performance of Beauty and the Beast, Jr. at 6 pm in the auditorium
And, on Sunday
Bedford’s first-ever Multicultural Festival kicks of with a Parade of Flags (featuring more than 50 nations!) led by Superintendent Jon Sills. There will be international food, crafts, music, dancing and a talk by Holocaust survivor Leon Rubenstein. The festival runs, rain or shine – since it’s indoors at Bedford High School – from noon to 5 pm.
The book sale continues from 1 until 4 at the library, with an Artist’s Reception for Writing with Light and Ink at 5 pm.
