Lane School reaches into the world each year, trying new strategies to enhance the education of its students. The school’s inaugural Women in Science Day took place on Wednesday, March 11 when more than 30 female scientists visited classrooms to share their work with Lane students.
The misconception of a male scientist with messy hair, working in his lab late at night was laid to rest by a cadre of accomplished and polished women scientists and engineers.
Beyond rethinking stereotypes, the programs demonstrated that science isn’t a subject that belongs in a silo, but instead involves an interdisciplinary approach. The presenters talked about how they developed their interest in science and how their work often requires math, reading and writing.
The guests offered talks about radar, DNA, diseases, germs, space shuttles, robots, driverless cars, air quality, animal brains, drug development, and more. At the end of the day, Principal Rob Ackerman said that he was impressed when he met all of the guests in one room before heading out to the classrooms. “Just listening to them talk gave me such an appreciation,” he said, “for what people in our community are trying to do to improve lives.”
