Today, a group of  Lane School staff members visited Middlesex Community College to attend a presentation by Christine McKinley, co-host of “Brad Meltzer’s Decoded” on the History Channel.  She was a wonderful speaker and certainly inspired our teachers to bring more engineering into the classrooms. Our teachers admired her advocacy for women pursuing careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

The Lane School science curriculum focuses on integrating more engineering opportunities for our students. The type of thinking which is a the core of being an engineer is important for all students to learn and use in their lives, whether engineering becomes a career choice or not. To help negate the occupational stereotypes which still exist in our society, Lane Principal Rob Ackerman has invited female scientists to visit every classroom on March 11th to do a “show and tell” about their jobs. I am hoping this helps our boys and girls recognize that there are no limits to what they can do for careers later in life.

Middlesex Community College’s One World Series hosted the History Channel’s Christine McKinley in a special program on the Bedford Campus on February 24.

In addition to helping solve some of history’s most compelling and perplexing riddles on History’s “Brad Meltzer’s Decoded,” McKinley is a licensed mechanical engineer, musician and author. A vocal advocate for women pursuing careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering & math), she has spent most of her engineering career designing and managing the construction of power plants, semiconductor facilities, hospitals and schools. Her musical, “Gracie and the Atom,” won a Drammy Award for original score in Portland, Ore.
