Connections – Tonight, hosting an Open Mic

The First Baptist Church of Bedford has successfully transitioned the building at 153 Concord Road from the Montessori School to the church/community use building known as “Connections.”  According to the pastor, Rev. Dr. Scott Arnold, the Montessori School left with a vision to expand and develop their school utilizing a space that they would own and manage as a natural part of their growth.  The church and the school have been supportive of one another and continue to have a positive relationship.

Tonight’s Connections Coffee House (CCH) is a place where people from the community can come for lively conversation, fun and live music.   This monthly event  is often scheduled on the third Friday night of the month.  February’s CCH on February 20 will host a “Presidential Stand-Up Comedy Night.”  Bring your best president quotes, jokes or stories, and you can dress up as a President or First Lady if you wish.

The building was renamed “Connections” as a result of dialogue in the church about becoming more community minded and connected and a desire to have a “Community Center” facility.   The church’s  vision is that Connections is a place where programs would help people become more connected to one another and God.  Pastor Scott said, ”Connections also can be a way of promoting a holistic perspective toward life:  education, fitness, spirituality, artistry, emotional support and community.”

Renovation of the building involved removing partitions on the main floor to open it up.  In addition, working with the town officials and inspectors, changes were made to improve fire safety, lighted exits and handrails.  Most of the facility has been repainted and freshened up.

Ten tables and 100 chairs were purchased with available church funds initially.  Church members and friends have been gradually reimbursing the church.  At the cost of $20 per chair and $120 per table, we are over 60% of our goal of $5,500.   Gifts to the church will be greatly appreciated.  The tables can seat at least 8 people each.

When asked how Connections is currently being used, the pastor responded that it is used for Sunday School called “Growing Together.”  The adults and youth right now are studying “Unlocking the Mysteries of Genesis” until mid-February, a video-discussion series from the Creation Science Institute.   After a 20-minute video, small groups discuss the topic and presentation around tables.

Following the Growing Together time, there is an informal time of fellowship downstairs at 12:00 noon.  This is known as the Fellowship or Coffee Hour at the Union St. Café, where snacks, coffee and beverages are provided.  Quite often, people make special food for this time with tables for both children and adults.

Occasionally, there are mission programs in Connections where missionaries come to speak about their work in foreign lands or America.   Also groups planning mission trips have met in Connections.

The Kamate Fitness program, offered by the Bedford Recreation Department, has many types of fitness classes in Connections including group fitness dance, group weight lifting with motion, yoga, and Tai Chi.  Kamate has begun to provide fitness and weight programs for children and youth as well.  Classes are held from Monday to Thursday and on Saturday morning in Connections.  Presently, there are over 10 classes per week.

For the future, the Town of Bedford is looking to develop art classes.  In addition, Pastor Scott is looking to develop adult and youth art classes that will start by February, and Marion Bryan of First Baptist Church is planning on teaching sewing classes.  The church has been approached by the Bedford Arts Council about having art exhibits in Connections, which is preliminary; however, there has been discussion of using the church’s grounds and parking lot for an outdoor arts fair.

The upstairs of Connections is 1300 square feet with a 100 person capacity.  The downstairs is 1100 square feet with a 100 person capacity.  Table seating capacity is about 64.  Accommodating many cars, there is parking in front and back of the building. Restrooms are available upstairs and downstairs.  Connections may be rented by non-profit groups or individuals within the community.  No alcohol may be served in the facility.

Inquiries about renting and scheduling may be directed to the church administrator, Bonnie Sestito, at  [email protected] or 781-275-8151.
