Last week’s Buccaneer varsity football game was called from the new press box installed behind the grandstand at Sabourin Field during the week of November 4.
Bedford voters were among the first to glimpse the press box on Election Day: It was the large grey ‘container’ at the end of the parking lot that many mistook for a temporary storage facility.

While voters streamed into Bedford’s polling place across from Sabourin Field, an installation crew busily bolted the metal superstructure into place behind the grandstand. A construction crane was to have moved the press box into position that afternoon; exceptionally high voter turnout delayed the actual installation until Wednesday.
Reports from Bedford TV touted the view of the field from the press box roof where they taped last Friday’s 27-12 win against Amesbury, as “Excellent!”

Bedford’s veteran sports announcer Mike Rosenberg called the new press box “Spacious… Two levels with a heater in the lower compartment. Real windows.”
Fabricated by the same company that built Sabourin Field’s grandstand, the press box was financed by the Mudge Fund and Bedford’s Recreation Department revolving fund. An elevator, or lift, to assure full accessibility would have substantially increased the press box’s cost, so Bedford applied for and was granted a two year installation waiver.
Although tonight’s varsity football game will be played in Stoneham, the press box is ready for Bedford’s Thanksgiving Classic at home against Concord-Carlisle High School at 10 am on November 27.
