Bedford’s 30th annual Holiday Coat Drive to benefit Boston’s St. Francis House Shelter will take place from 8 am until dusk on Saturday, November 22, in its accustomed place along Great Road, in front of the Bedford Marketplace (home of  Whole Foods and Marshalls).

St. Francis House and John Dodge’s coat drive were both begun in 1984 — the year Dodge turned 61. Over time Dodge’s drive has gathered thousands of clean coats, hats, scarves and mittens for distribution through St. Francis House, New England’s largest day shelter for men and women.

Dodge and his wife, the former Constance Donovan, recently moved to Brightview in Billerica, but their Bedford connections remain deep. Bedford’s former Town Historian was spotted at Lane School earlier this week when he was honored along with dozens other veterans at the school’s first-ever Veterans Day observance.

The annual Thanksgiving coat drive is one of Dodge’s proudest accomplishments; with the help of family and friends he pledges to be present along Great Road for as long as he’s able.
