People often refer to the term “anxiety” as a synonym for stress or worry, but for 6.8 million American adults, it’s a constant, every-day struggle. Individuals with Generalized Anxiety Disorder feel like they cannot stop their constant stream of worrying. Even though many individuals living with it realize that their anxiety is much more intense than the situation warrants, they are unable to stop it. Many have difficulty relaxing and concentrating, startle very easily and find it hard to fall or stay asleep.

The following are some physical symptoms that can often accompany anxiety:

  • Fatigue
  • Headaches
  • Muscle tension
  • Muscle aches
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Trembling or twitching
  • Irritability
  • Sweating
  • Feeling out of breath
  • Hot flashes.

If you believe you or loved one may be suffering from generalized anxiety, take Bedford Youth and Family Services (BYFS) online screening on their home page on the Town of Bedford website or at https://www.mentalhealthscreening.org/screening/BYFS. The screening is quick and anonymous and will provide immediate direction based on the results.
