Citizens’ Review of Charter Requested

Submitted by Betsey Anderson

Charter-ReviewThe Town’s Charter Review Committee has begun conducting the required periodic five-year review of the Bedford Charter.

The committee has requested that citizens who have comments participate in the process at upcoming meetings scheduled for June 11 and 25 at 7 PM in the second floor conference room in the Town Hall.  Review and response from the Town’s departments, elected officials and appointed committees have also been requested.

Bedford’s Charter is a citizens’ Home Rule Charter constructed through a lengthy process and accepted by the voters in March, 1974.  Any recommended changes must be passed by a two-thirds vote at Annual Town Meeting and a majority vote at a Town Election.  Copies of the Charter are in the Reference Department of the Bedford Public Library, and in the office of the Town Clerk at the Town Hall and on the Town’s website www.bedfordma.gov.
