Senate wants Hanscom funding to be permanent

Submitted by State Senator Michael Barrett

Mike-Barrett-logoThe State Senate’s version of the annual budget includes long-sought language making Bedford’s reimbursement for educating military kids a permanent feature of the state’s funding of local education.

“Bedford schools are pleased to open their doors to kids living at Hanscom but, because federal land and housing are tax exempt, the town can’t collect property taxes to help pay for their education,” Barrett said.  “This language would ensure Bedford gets compensated for years to come.”

The Senate provision sets aside $1.3 million in each fiscal year going forward for the education of students who live at Hanscom Air Force Base and Joint Base Cape Cod.  At present, Bedford educates just over 100 students living at Hanscom.

Barrett and Rep. Ken Gordon secured money for Bedford in the House and Senate versions of the budget this year and last.  But currently such a process must be repeated every year and carries no guarantees of future success.  The Senate language on permanent funding does just that, and comes after the Bedford School Committee and Selectmen stressed its importance to their legislators.

Barrett directed praise at Senate President Therese Murray (D-Plymouth) and Senate Ways and Means Chair Stephen Brewer (D-Barre) for including the measure in the budget.

The permanent language needs to survive a conference committee between the House and the Senate before going to the governor.  “We’re not there yet, but we’re on our way,” said Barrett.
