Bedford Police Chief Robert Bongiorno and Fire Chief David Grunes are today lauding the teamwork and professionalism shown by their departments, including a pair of brothers who serve on each, after a quiet overnight shift got very interesting, very quickly.

Officer Jon Busa and Firefighter Matt Busa were working shortly after midnight Monday when they were called to Bonnievale Drive for the report of a woman in labor. They arrived not a moment too soon, as the baby was born, at home, just a minutes later.

Four Bedford Firefighters and Officer Busa delivered the baby in a just-slightly cramped bathroom. Paramedics from Armstrong Ambulance arrived less than 7 minutes later, but the baby girl arrived first.

“I can’t believe how quickly it happened. We got there, the mother pushed, and there she was. It was a pretty unbelievable experience,” said Bedford Fire Lieutenant Scott Ricker, the ranking officer on the scene. “The baby let out a healthy cry, then we wrapped her up, and it was all pretty calm and peaceful, considering what had just happened.”

The call came in at 12:07 a.m., and the baby missed being born on Mother’s Day by just a few minutes. Mother and daughter were taken by Bedford Fire Ambulance to an area hospital, where they were reported to be doing well.

For the Busa brothers, it was their first special delivery on the job.

“As a first responder, delivering a baby is always a possibility on any given shift, but you never know when it’s going to happen or how it’s going to go,” Officer Jon Busa said. “But we were clearly in the right place at the right time!”

“In the emergency world, a lot of what we do involves helping people who are going through something negative. So bringing a new life into the world is a pretty amazing feeling,” Firefighter Matt Busa said. “It’s something I’ll never forget.”

The chiefs would also like to acknowledge the work of Bedford Firefighters Mark Radwich, Mark Daly, and Nick Anderson and Police Sergeants Jeffrey Wardwell and Richard Vitale for their work on-scene.
