Is Your Alcohol Use Risky?

Submitted by Bedford Youth and Family Services

Alcohol_AbuseApril is National Alcohol Awareness Month and Bedford Youth and Family Services offers an anonymous questionnaire to assess your drinking.Perhaps you’ve noticed the potential effects of alcohol in yourself or a coworker such as missed deadlines, frequent tardiness, sleeping on the job, or tremors. Not any one of these signs means that someone is an alcoholic. However, an online assessment is a good first step to determine if help is needed.

The simple self-assessment at https://rethinkingdrinking.niaaa.nih.gov/IsYourDrinkingPatternRisky/WhatsYourPattern.asp, or check the screenings section of the BYFS home page at www.bedfordma.gov/youth  to help you understand your drinking habits and provide treatment information if necessary. The screening only takes a few minutes and is confidential.

Take back control of your life today.

Do you know how much alcohol defines at-risk drinking? For men, at-risk or heavy drinking is defined as consuming more than four drinks on any day and more than 14 per week. For women, it is defined as consuming more than three drinks on any day and more than 7 drinks per week. Surprised?

Alcohol is the single most used and abused drug in America. According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), nearly 14 million Americans (1 in every 13 adults) abuse alcohol or are alcoholics. Several million more adults engage in risky drinking patterns that could lead to alcohol problems. The costs to society in terms of lost productivity, health care costs, traffic accidents, and personal tragedies are staggering.
