Citizen Scholarship Foundation / Bedford Dollars for Scholars Phon-a-thon co-chairman Sal Pomponi reports that 82 BHS student volunteers garnered 950 pledges during CSF’s 49th annual pledge drive hosted at Mitre Corporation on March 1 and 2. Nearly $2M has been awarded in scholarships since CSF was founded in 1965.
Current pledges are valued at more than $37,000, but households that could not be reached will receive donation request letters so the final Phon-a-thon total is expected to exceed $50,000.
Donors are asked to please return the pledge envelopes that you will receive in the mail at the earliest opportunity to CSF / Bedford Dollars for Scholars, POB 585, Bedford, MA 01730.
When asked about their participation, Saturday’s student volunteers focused on several themes:
- The importance of the program – both to fund current scholarships and also those in future years.
- CSF participation runs in families – brothers and sisters make calls in the same shift, and volunteers share the importance of CSF with their younger siblings.
- Community service is an important part of student life, and many of the CSF volunteers serve for several years.
In addition to the Phon-a-thon, CSF also receives donations honoring individuals or organizations; many of these gifts fund permanent scholarships. CSF also sponsors a variety of fundraising activities including Bedford Day and Flatbread dinners.
All CSF awards are based on merit with the amount determined by need by the selection committee of teachers, civic leaders and CSF directors. Scholarships will be awarded by CSF / Bedford Dollars for Scholars in May.
