Coming-EventsStarting with tomorrow’s BARC workshop on tree pests and BEST/PTO circus and carnival; a lecture on modern Chinese history and an artists’ reception at the library on Sunday; Annual Town Meeting on Monday; a Relay for Life fundraiser on Tuesday; the Bedford Historical Society’s lecture about Job Lane on Wednesday; a pair of concerts on Saturday, one at Middlesex Community College and the other at First Parish on the Common; a forum on the carbon tax next Sunday; and the girls’ volleyball fundraiser on Monday, March 31 — it’s going to be a busy time in Bedford.

Saturday, March 22

Come One! Come All!  to the 2014 BEST/PTO Carnival & Circus – Saturday, March 22nd,at the Bedford High School!  Bucky and friends are back by popular demand!  Returning again this year:  Principal Pie Shop, Police Car Rides, Face Painting, Games, Prizes, Raffle, Food and much more! This Saturday, Mollie Freilicher, from the Mass Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR), will be teaching us about tree pests and how to identify them. This information is important for homeowners to help them protect the trees and bushes in their own yards. The knowledge will also be useful if you’d like to join the BARC- and DPW- led Inventory of Bedford’s street trees in May. Mollie, as personable as she is well-informed, will be holding the training session this Saturday, March 22 from 10-11 a.m. in the Bedford Town Hall Multipurpose Room.

Sunday, March 23

Artists’ Reception from 5 to 6 pm for the juried, traveling exhibit of botanical art and illustrations on display at the Bedford Library through May 8.  From the Mountains to the Sea: Plants, Trees, and Shrubs of New England combines art and science in a show by members of the New England Society of Botanical Artists.

Crosscurrents of Chinese MusicThis lecture/recital/multimedia event will feature traditional Chinese music, a new composition written expressly for traditional Chinese instruments and a composition by a Chinese composer which combines Eastern and Western influences. The program will open with Wang Guowei, Artistic Director of the ensemble Music from China and noted erhu soloist, performing traditional Chinese music, and then a video will be shown of the 2013 world premiere performance of Es for Erhu, Yangqin, Pipa and Guzheng by MCC faculty member Richard Chowenhill performed by Music from China. The event will conclude with Four Memories in Watercolor for Piano by Tan Dun played by Carmen Rodríguez-Peralta.  Co-sponsored by Asia Today, MCC’s Interdisciplinary Weekend 2014 at 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 29  in the MCC Concert Hall • Bedford campus

First Parish in Bedford, the Music Committee at First Parish in Bedford presents two performances, at 4 and at 7:30 pm, of  Three Masterpieces by Three Masters, a concert featuring works by Bach, Mozart, and Purcell. The program begins with Bach’s exuberant Brandenburg Concerto #5, featuring virtuoso harpsichordist Yoko Hagino, with Bradford Conner, First Parish Music Director, conducting a string ensemble. Soprano Epp Sonin follows, singing Mozart’s glorious “Exsultate Jubilate,” with Carol Epple, flute, and Elizabeth Connors, clarinet.  Finally, the program presents a semi-staged version of Purcell’s brief opera, Dido and Aeneas, a classic story of love and abandonment.  Mezzo soprano Cynthia Mork will sing the role of Dido, with other First Parish members and friends Carol Krusemark, Ben Sears and Sandra Seitz soloists, and the adult choir filling out the cast and chorus.  The production features dances by CreationDance, directed by Helena Froehlich. Don’t miss this opportunity to hear these three great classics! The Bedford League of Women Voters will hold a forum on a system of taxation called “carbon pricing” or the “carbon tax” on Sunday, March 30, from 3-5 pm at the home of Carol Amick and Bill Moonan, 18 Crescent Ave.  Bedford’s State Senator, Michael Barrett of Lexington, will be the featured speaker. BHS Volleyball Fundraiser –Monday, March 31 from 4-8pm – Please come and support the Bedford High School Volleyball team on Monday, March 31st from4-8pm for a fundraiser at Chipotle Mexican Grill at 301 Great Rd Bedford, MA. You may bring in a flyer, show it on your smart phone or tell the cashier you are there for the BHS Volleyball fundraiser and Chipotle will donate 50% of the proceeds.
