Pianist and versatile musician Anshuman Das, 17, of Bedford, won Indian Hill Music School’s 2014 Student Concerto Competition in late February, earning the opportunity to appear as special guest soloist with Orchestra of Indian Hill under the direction of Maestro Bruce Hangen during the orchestra’s Corporate Night at Symphony concert.  He will perform Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue. The concert will also include Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 and Rimsky-Korsakov’s Russian Easter Overture. The concert will take place at 7:30 pm on Saturday, April 12 in the Littleton High School auditorium.

Anshuman and his parents Padmaja and Ajit moved from Calcutta to the United States when he was three years old and he began taking piano lessons at the age of five. In his early years, he faced many challenges and at one point, even wished to stop playing. However, with his mother’s encouragement, he was able to regain focus, and at the age of ten, began studying with Christina Dietrich at Indian Hill Music. He was also the winner of Indian Hill Music School’s 2012 Student Concerto Competition.

In addition to piano, Anshuman plays the violin and performs in the Bedford High School chamber and symphony orchestras. He is a member of the National Honor Society and the varsity tennis team. His musical goal is to learn all twenty-four Etudes of Chopin, his idol. According to Anshuman, “When I hear piano music, my energy is elevated to a whole new level…I can’t go a day without the sound of the piano.”
