When you think of elementary school field trips you probably don’t think of cross country skiing or snowshoeing. But at the Lane School, we strive to think outside the box.
Student learning isn’t just about the 3 R’s, so when Physical Education teachers Mr. Smith and Mrs. Post developed the idea of a winter field trip to Great Brook Farm in Carlisle, the visit was scheduled. With grade four students studying the northeast region as part of the Social Studies curriculum, it became another way to help students think of the big idea, or “where you live, is how you live.”
On a sunny and seasonably cold day this week, a pair of classes headed off to Carlisle and tried two different winter sports. Many of the students had never been on skis, let alone snowshoes. Despite a few tumbles by kids (and a couple chaperones), the day was a big success.
More grade four classes will participate in February, as long as there is enough snow cover.
Thanks Rob. What a great idea!
