The history of Emerson Hospital — the favorite hospital of numerous residents and a designated community hospital for Bedford– will be the topic of the Bedford Historical Society’s Jan. 22 program meeting in the Meeting Room of the Bedford Free Public Library.

Guest speaker Kenton Blagbrough, a long-time Emerson Hospital employee and volunteer, carried out extensive research on the hospital and authored “The Centennial of Emerson Hospital in Concord” for the hospital’s 100 year in 2011.  His work provides details about the family of Charles Emerson – a nephew of Ralph Waldo Emerson, who donated land along the Sudbury River and $20,000 to establish a 14-bed “cottage” hospital.

Blagbrough, who has portrayed Charles Emerson at hospital programs, has a life-long love of history.  He has BS and Master’s degrees in History, as well as a Master’s in Library Science.  He became interested in conducting the Emerson Hospital research when volunteering in the hospital’s medical library.
