Boxing Day? The day after Christmas? December 26, 2013 will long be remembered as the day Red Sox fever truly hit Bedford.
While an official count wasn’t taken, First Parish senior minister John Gibbons estimates that a thousand individuals could have passed through the building during the event. The wait was at times longer than an hour, with the line snaking through the building from the Elm Street entrance through the church’s Common Room and back into the sanctuary.
Faithful Red Sox fans sporting team gear (from a vintage 1970s-era cap to a snazzy new leather jacket, with plenty of tee shirts and sweatshirts for good measure) arrived in droves, drawn to see three pieces of silver displayed on the chancel at First Parish on the Common.
Crafted by Tiffany and Co., the Commissioner’s Trophies (as they are officially known) were presented by Bud Selig to the Boston Red Sox to mark the team’s World Series wins in 2004, 2007 and, most recently, 2013. According to the Tiffany website, their design features 30 flags, one for each Major League team, with latitude and longitude lines symbolizing the world.
Everyone went home with a photograph, or several, many of them taken by the Red Sox ambassadors who accompany the trophy.
The trophies travel in their own car, with team personnel in attendance. At the end of the evening, they return to their Tiffany-blue chamois cloth bags and are securely belted into the back seat for the ride back to Fenway.
